Fraser dreamed of summer. It was the strongest memory, the July they’d spent in a cottage in Devon, back when he was eight years old. It was a tiny house, he’d been crammed into bunk beds with his brother, but that whole month, they’d roamed free, staging vast sieges over the river and storming an empty grain shed nearby. He’d stayed out playing until dark and picked wild strawberries by the dozen, cramming them into his pockets for later until his mum despaired over his stained clothes.

He woke with the feeling still bright in his veins, that wide-open sense of possibility, of long summer evenings and no place to be. He yawned and felt something soft tickling his face. There it was again, the scent of strawberries, like a message from the past.

He opened his eyes. Jenny was curled up, asleep in bed beside him. Her hair was draped across the pillow, and the scent of her shampoo was drifting in the air.

Fraser smiled. Now that was something worth waking up to.

He watched her for a moment in the early morning light, relishing the glimpse of her, so unguarded and raw. The steady rise and fall of her breathing under that baggy college T-shirt, the hint of a smile on her face. He was close enough to count the freckles dotted across her nose and make out the birthmark that nestled just below her collarbone. Everything about her was vivid technicolor, even sleeping like this.

She took his breath away.

He carefully slipped out, and—careful not to wake her—padded barefoot across the cold bedroom floor. His room was just down the hall, and he paused to grab a robe and pair of boxers before continuing on downstairs. There wasn’t much in the refrigerator, but he managed to rustle up a breakfast tray: toast with jam and honey, a pot of tea, and some leftover pastries from a bakery box. When he made the trip back up to her room, he found her awake, crouched in front of her bureau mirror trying to tame the wild tangles of her hair. She straightened with a jolt, like she’d just been caught.

“Hi!” Jenny blurted, her cheeks blushing an adorable shade of pink. She tugged her T-shirt down to cover her thighs—but that only brought the neckline dangerously low. “I was just . . . ummm . . . Hi.”

“Hi,” Fraser echoed, smiling to see her so flustered. He placed the tray down on her dresser, and then pulled her in for a good morning kiss.

Jenny tensed, but as soon as his lips found hers, she relaxed, leaning into him with a sigh. He tasted toothpaste and smiled again. “Minty fresh,” he murmured, pulling away. Her blush deepened.

“I thought, you know . . .” Jenny was stumbling over her words, and Fraser didn’t think he’d ever seen her this scattered. She always seemed so together, whether she was sweet-talking him into a favor or beating his ass in a game of darts.

“I’d know what?” he asked, teasing.
